The Museum has a long history of working with educational institutions of all kinds across our community. These special exhibitions are the result of collaborations between Museum staff, and staff and students at Missouri State University. These collaborations range from providing space and resources to mount exhibitions of original work, to the study of permanent collection objects, to hands-on learning opportunities in museum work, including art curation, interpretive activities, and public programs.

Ancient Artifacts Abroad

Exhibit Details

December 9, 2023 - June 16, 2024
Hartman Gallery

The objects in this special exhibition are travelers – across both time and space. These artifacts, drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, either come from or were inspired by items from the ancient Mediterranean world. Ancient Artifacts Abroad considers how and why objects moved around in antiquity and also how they traversed social, cultural, and religious spaces over time. The exhibition’s title seeks to ‘flip the script’ by reminding visitors that these artifacts are in fact “abroad,” having been brought to Springfield from their original landscapes. This is the first time many of these artifacts have been on display at the Museum. Missouri State University students contributed to artifact research and the exhibition’s curation, under the guidance of Missouri State University Professors Dr. Julia Troche (Associate Professor, Department of History) and Dr. Bryan Brinkman (Assistant Professor, Department of Languages, Cultures, and Religions), with direction from the Museum’s curatorial and education staff.

Armstrong Gallery

This special exhibition highlights the Museum’s collection of Renaissance manuscripts and prints, ranging from hand-lettered and letterpress Bible pages to finely engraved pieces by some of the tradition's most celebrated artists. These works allow us to explore the transition from manuscript to print, strides in print technology and technique, and the priorities, fashions, language, and storytelling of an age that in many ways shaped the values of our own.

This exhibition is guest curated by Dr. Mitzi Kirkland-Ives (Professor, Art + Design Department) with additional research by the following students: Ellen Aulbach, Brooke Buehler, Hannah Burns, Zachary Caraway, Tanner Caruthers, Paige Cawein, Ann Collier, Jordan Davis, Jesse Fallert, Danielle Gilbert, Hanna Henroid, Roman Herries, Katelyn Homer, Timothy Keeling, Julia Kidwell, Steeler Lawrence, J. L. Librach, Nadia May-Peraza, Addison Miller, Alexandra Miller, Madelyn Pohl, Hannah Sparks, Abigail Stash, and Hannah Vancour; with special assistance from Dr. Magda Hayton (Adjunct Faculty, Department of Languages, Cultures, and Religions) and direction from the Museum's curatorial and education staff.
